| Abstract: |
| Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the herpesvirus family, is associated with a variety of diseases, including infectious mononucleosis, chronic active EBV infection, EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and EBV-related autoimmune disorders. Primary EBV infection predominantly occurs in children aged 3 to 5 years.
Recent studies have demonstrated that the dysregulation of T helper 17 (Th17) and regulatory T (Treg) cell balance plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of EBV-associated diseases. Th17 cells secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-17, contributing to inflammatory responses and tissue damage, whereas Treg cells maintain immune homeostasis through immunosuppressive mechanisms. EBV infection disrupts Th17/Treg equilibrium by modulating host immune responses, leading to immune dysfunction. This imbalance facilitates viral persistence and promotes disease progression. This article reviews the characteristics of EBV, the functional roles of Th17 and Treg cells, the mechanisms underlying EBV-induced immune dysregulation, and recent advances in the understanding of EBV-associated diseases. |
